Dominic Walsh Dance Theater proudly performs An Evening in Italy: Celebrating 2013, The Year of Italian Culture in the United States. The program features dancers from Sarasota Ballet in two original works by Dominic Walsh, “I Napoletani” and “Bello.”
After being tapped by Fabrizio Nava, Consul General of Italy, to participate in this year’s celebration, Walsh handpicked I Napoletani and Bello to highlight the country that has been a huge inspiration to him creatively.
Set to Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater and popular Neopolitan music from the late 1800s, I Napoletani is a lighthearted homage to the people of of Naples.
Bello, set to five Italian arias by Georg Frederick Handel, is a tribute to the life of dancer Mark Arvin, a friend of Walsh’s who passed away a month before the piece’s 2005 premiere.
2013 – Year of Italian Culture in the United States, is an initiative held under the auspices of the President of the Italian Republic and organized by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of Italy in Washington. The aim of the initiative is to showcase Italian culture, not only in its traditional form of historical and artistic legacy, but also as a dynamic asset that gives value to the future relationship between Italy and the United States.
This is a ticketed event for the covered seating area. Free tickets are available (4 per person over age 16 while they last) at the Miller Outdoor Theatre box office the day of the performance between the hours of 10:30am-1pm. If tickets remain at 1pm, the box office will re-open one hour before show time to distribute the remaining tickets. As always, open seating on the hill.
