What a night! There has not been an event like this in Houston in a long time or frankly speaking ever, even if we consider the scale of the event.
The night was complete with entertainment and activities, including a live signing by Elariz Mamedoglu, Azerbaijani dancing, kids dancing, belly dancing show, as well as disco party lead by a deejay.
Tables were covered with delicious food – cold appetizers, different kinds of kebabs, baklava – as well as with Semeni, a symbol of Novruz holiday.
The celebration took place at a local Banquet Hall. The event was sold out within 5 days once the sales started a month prior to the event. The final number of attendees reached 150 people, most of them Azerbaijanis from Houston and surrounding areas.
The doors opened at 7 p.m. Everyone was on time and excited for the night. The official program started a little past 8 p.m., with a video by Emin Agalarov – Azerbaijan.
The night was opened with an introduction by TM, an active member of the Azerbaijani diaspora in the U.S. and founder of TexasAzerbaijanis.com. In his speech, he welcomed all the guests and thanked the organizers and volunteers who helped to make this night possible.
Sevinj Zeynalli, a board member of Azerbaijani Center, followed with an overview of the history of Novruz holiday, as well as traditions and customs well known to everyone in Azerbaijan.
Next, Irada Akhundova was invited to the stage to congratulate the guests with Novruz. Irada has been a very active member both in Houston community and general Azerbaijani diaspora in the U.S for over 20 years. She thanked both organizers and sponsors of the event.
The night continued with kids dance, made possible by Farida Aslanova.
After the dance, Elariz stepped on the stage and everyone got engaged in dancing. The singer made sure that nobody leaves the dance floor.
The was one more surprise prepared for the guests – a belly dance show. The show was breathtaking and involved a real snake.
Once the show was over, Elariz continued performing in front of the packed dance floor.
This event was organized by Azerbaijan Center by Togrul Mamedbekov and Azad Mamedov, with very active help from Irada Akhundova and Sevinj Zeynalli, as well as volunteers from Azerbaijan Center (Saida Fagala, Anjelika Dilbazi, Jamil Kadirov, and Musa Nasibov). We are also thankful to the sponsor of the event decorations and other miscellaneous expenses to the Kwizi Rent.
